I am proud to say that my business is run from a desk in a buzzing room, that used to be a burlesque spot, on the second floor of a two-story building at the corner of West Broadway and Grand, atop our own personal cafe downstairs. The TOWN SOHO office is simply the best in real estate. And TOWN’s Astor Place office with its iconic clock over the (just returned) cube was a big draw for me when I went to work there. In these offices, even the biggest hitters sit in basically a pen of cubicles, so the energy is electric.
Capitalizing on that electricity, shared office space has become a signature of the moment for working life in New York City. Getting together has never been easier with several affordable options to have the team in one place and new offerings make finding the right fit achievable in the luxury sector. Start-up’s are fueling much of the inventory pop. Here entrepreneaurs are put together with coworkers in small offices and like minds in larger shared spaces, with the more boutique offering useful amenities.
Many of these spots have different angles. There is something for everyone. For example, Soho House, which seems to be monetizing more on real estate acquisition these days, really could be said to be a workspace for creatives; although it may be more of a social club. Catering to a similar crowd, Neihouse is really the mirror, being just a bit more work than social.
Without the exclusivity; Wework paved the way for the higher-end, more boutique model to flourish. Landlords looked at the success of two young guys saying they were going to sublease office space in NYC — and actually doing it– making it possible all over the country.
Early on the capitalization and brand-building within this growing industry was aptly-named Industrious, which has several locations throughout the county. Also two young guys, Jamie Hodari and Justin Stewart are bright minds (and best friends) who together excel in creating a product and delivering service that is best-in-class, and doing so over and over again across the map. While I look forward to what is undoubtedly on the horizon, they also just opened their signature Brooklyn location. An entire building, just off the new development site Pacific Park and blocks away from Barclay Center, catering to the sexier neighborhoods around Downtown BK. Its primed to become a part of the fabric of the area. Meticulously built, Industrious provides all the comforts that make you feel good about being at the office, like 80’s vibes with the old school florescent lit copy room that doubles as a happy hour hangout.
With so many people working remotely on their laptops, its tempting take advantage of having a solo desk. At Blender Workspace, where lifestyle meets workplace, the solo desks have prime real estate on the sunny Southwest corner. But its the private offices, conference rooms, seating vignettes, lounges and the huge cafe that make Blender the type of place where you can both go to work and get away from it– a full floor overlooking the corner of Madison and 30th Street. When you step foot into Blender the first thing you notice is the exceptional craftsmanship then you begin to feel the energy of the place. Built by Scott Sassoon, who I had the pleasure of learning from and working for at Promenade Design + Build, and curated along with Amro Quaddura and Pete Korbel. The team at Blender has captured that feeling; they have the ascetic down and are beginning to fill the room. Opportunities to utilize the stunning space are just now becoming available for the first time.
The elevated office trend is flourishing on a larger scale as well; just look at what Google, Facebook and even brands like Spotify have done with their offices; making them fun, keeping their employees happy to be there, and the energy vibrant. Shared office spaces like Industrious and Blender are making something akin to the high-level work places of these huge companies attainable for just about anyone.
